Book Reviews

WOW...Rarely have I read a book that took me into the authors mind and painted such a vivid picture of the experience of trauma, Love and the intense drive to overcome such adversity that sought to destroy both the physical and psychological condition of a man.

A story that is both clear and emotive, and yet the way the author describes his experience and the sub-conscious battle with the snake and the many other analogies allows us to be with him in the realm of darkness where the battles commence.

A contrast to the dark times of the mind were the moments shared with snapshots of his life where we were taken to times of love with family and trips abroad and of other memorable times such as his time serving in HM Forces (Good and bad). Within these moments I was able to see where the strength to carry on came from and how a lifetime of courage, determination and love had shaped the warrior now battling with inner demons and fighting for his life.

On a personal level I was reminded of my own time in hospital and fighting my own battles, and reading this book gave me some clarity of thought and understanding of my own trauma and the difficulties faced by family and friends. Almost triggered (and not in a bad way) with vivid memories of my own battles and of the process through recovery and beyond where life is changed forever with a new perspective and outlook on life and the way the world is viewed.

Aron tells of Karen's anguish and above all wanting her to be safe throughout this ordeal and of the guilt he feels for 'putting her though it' and this again resonates with me and reminds me of the fragility of the human mind and the psychological impact of trauma on both the individual and those close. However, there is the strength and resilience again as an awareness of the psychological impact is researched and the development of strategies are formed through therapy.

Aron Welsh's tale serves the reader through his fast-paced prose, to grasp some understanding of the experience of medical trauma and the aftermath that is "Never Really Over".  Perhaps it is hard to grasp the intensity of being incredibly sick, near-death and in the throes of a living nightmare of delirium, but I believe this book will bring those that have not experienced it a little closer to understanding. The numbers of people who have their lives saved through the power of current medical know-how is increasing, and on the darker side results in millions of people who are everyday struggling with the post-traumatic syndrome landscape of anxiety, depression, feelings of inadequacy, difficulty with cognitive tasks and challenges of interpersonal relationships. Welsh's  breezy style does not spare the reader from the horrors sickness and delirium and the surprising terror of survival.

As a psychotherapist I have had the privilege of journeying alongside many people having to come to terms with the devastating effects of trauma. There is nothing more rewarding than reaching the end of therapy and seeing them finally walk free.

Aron's story is truly inspiring.  Hospitalised with a life threatening infection, his detailed account of what it is like to be in a coma, to experience ITU psychosis and Post Intensive Care Syndrome, has provided me with so much more insight into, and empathy for, his plight.  I bore witness to the amazing determination and resilience he brought to our work together.

His story is one of survival. But more than this it is a testimony to the indelible nature of the human spirit and our ability to heal in the face of all odds.
